Canon Point: Just before returning to Etansel (post-event "Flourite", pre-event "Teardrop Crystal")

Setting: The Jumi are a race of human-like beings with gigantic jewels in their chests. They are often named for these jewels, such as Elazul for his lapis lazuli core, Reubens for his ruby core, and Pearl for...well, you get the idea. It's not known exactly how a Jumi is born--it seems to involve a stone "maturing", but it's never stated what makes a rock so special that it becomes a person--and they can only be killed when their jewel core is removed from their bodies.

Jumi have a few racial traits, the most important of which is their tears. Jumi tears can heal any wound; if enough Jumis pool their tears, they can create a Teardrop Crystal that can bring someone back from the brink of death. The Jumi freely shared their tears among each other, keeping the race alive with a communal life force.

The Jumi built a golden, spiraling city called Etansel and lived there peacefully. But when the Mana Tree burned down and powerful sorcerers began fighting for the artifacts and remnants of Mana, the Jumi's city was breached. Conjurors valued the Jumi cores for their magical power, so the city was repeatedly plundered with Jumi being slaughtered.

In order to preserve themselves, the Jumi sealed off their city of Etansel and created a new ruling system, putting everyone into Strata. The lowest Stratum was the "clods", worthless stones without sparkle, little better than peasants. In the middle were regular Jumis without any sort of distinction. Then there were the half-Lucidia and the Lucidia. It's never stated what these guys are, but they appear to be the standard guardians and knights. At the top was the Clarius and his/her attendants.

Under the new rule, the Clarius took on a huge burden -- rather than all Jumi crying for one another, now the Clarius would provide tears for the entire race. The Jumi could not afford to bleed out life for each other or for racial outsiders. Now, they would only need to sacrifice one person. When the Clarius had served for a hundred years, she was retired and replaced (assuming she hadn't died yet).

In order to protect each other as well, Jumi divided themselves into pairings, as guardians and knights. Knights were skilled fighters in various weapons, and guardians were meant to heal their knights with tears. Under the Clarius rule, however, guardians became very, very useless, as they were forbidden to cry. As a result, no one left Etansel, the Bejeweled City. They stayed near the Clarius while the outside world remained unaware.

That being said, the outside world may have been discouraged from searching for the lost Jumi. A legend--put forth either by the Jumi themselves to ward off contact, or by humans as a racial stigma--indicated that those who cried for Jumi turned to stone.

Meanwhile, the sorcerers who had previously lusted after Jumi cores disappeared. The Mana Tree had burned, the Goddess had left the land, and all the artifacts remaining from the Mana force within the world had vanished. The wars over the artifacts died down. Those who had fought for the artifacts now became afraid of seeking power. All the same, the Jumi did not give up their way of life, despite the danger having passed. But regardless of their efforts to preserve themselves, the Jumi population continued to dwindle, and many were afraid the race would die out.

It wasn't until Blackpearl left Etansel that the Jumi began to trickle into the world. She intended to find the Sword of Mana, an artifact unaccounted for, in order to save the Jumi race. However, Blackpearl was the knight of the Clarius, who could not leave the city. Knowing this, Blackpearl appointed Alexandra as the Clarius's new knight. Alexandra then smuggled the Clarius, Florina, out of the city. With the Clarius missing, the Jumi had no choice but to flee the city and go into hiding elsewhere.

"Elsewhere" meant the dozens of cities and regions in the surrounding land. The artifacts of Mana left behind by the Goddess formed into the places destroyed by the artifact wars and the Mana Tree's destruction. Small cities and towns flourished amid dry desert highways, cold mountains, and quiet lakes. The Jumi were able to hide themselves among the regular humans of these cities by covering their cores and deflecting awkward questions. No matter what, though, the Jumi were tied to each other. Their cores were said to "resonate", responding to each other's presence. They were drawn to one another, and perhaps, in the end, back to Etansel itself.

The actual game mechanics have you, the hero(ine), gathering the artifacts of Mana and using them to reshape the world. Each city, mountain range, highway, and cavern was sealed away in an artifact and must be reawakened. As the heroine reshaped the world, more people became aware of the Jumi, and the heroine herself became tied to their plight.

Personality: Pearl and Blackpearl are not different personalities, exactly. They are more like two people sharing the same vessel. Blackpearl came first, a respected Jumi knight. But when she confronted Alexandra about smuggling the Clarius out of Etansel, Alexandra struck her core with a knife and fled. Blackpearl's core was too damaged to survive, and she ended up receding, becoming Pearl instead. Pearl had no memories of being Blackpearl, and was for all intents and purposes a brand-new Jumi. Once Pearl became more entrenched in the Jumi's plight, and met Alexandra herself, Blackpearl reawakened. Pearl and Blackpearl, at this point, are both aware of one another and can switch between one and the other at will.

Pearl is shy and reserved. She's also a bit of an airhead, known to wander away from Elazul when deep in thought. And this isn't your normal wandering away; she ends up on highways, in caves, and at the bottoms of towers. She gets very embarrassed at having to be "delivered" back to Elazul, as she doesn't like to burden anyone. Though she doesn't look it, Pearl is ambitious and loyal. More than anything, she wants to serve her race as the Clarius, the only person who cries tears of healing for the Jumi. Though this means slowly bleeding away her life, Pearl will do anything in order to feel useful and helpful.

Blackpearl is more aloof. She has made some very unpopular decisions, earning her distrust among the Jumi, particularly Diana and Alexandra. Blackpearl doesn't really care. She will do whatever she has to in order to preserve her dying race. She presents an imposing figure and commands a great deal of respect from the other Jumi as the Clarius's knight. She also, however, opposes the Clarius rule, seeking an alternate method of preserving the race by searching for the Sword of Mana.

Pearl's speaking mannerisms tend to be halting and hesitant. Oftentimes, she can't bring herself to say anything at all, and will simply look away and blush. Blackpearl, on the other hand, is firm and gets to the point. She is a woman of few words and doesn't hesitate in delivering the hard message. In just about every way, the two are opposites...aside from what drives them: the desire to save the Jumi.

Abilities, Weaknesses, and Power Limitation Suggestions: Pearl has no powers. One conversation refers to her as a "princess" and "heiress to the memories of antiquity", but there is no explanation as to what either of these entail. Pearl has no fighting abilities, and no support abilities for the heroine.

Blackpearl wields a massive warhammer and is incredibly skilled with it, knowing several special techniques to create earthquakes or black holes. Her support ability immediately charges the player character's Special Techniques gauge, so it can be construed that Blackpearl is a morale booster of sorts. She does not know magic.

In Sacrosanct, Pearl will...not change. Blackpearl will lose her special techniques, though not her hammer itself (see inventory). I'm not sure how to limit the morale boost, or if I should even include it at all. I'd like to keep it, if possible. Maybe as an "inspiring presence" trait.

In-game, Pearl and Blackpearl can switch between each other at will. This ability will remain on the station.

Inventory: Pearl has no items.
Blackpearl has no items aside from her hammer, a huge weapon as tall as she is and with a fish fin on the end. Yeah, I'm not sure what's going on there either.

Appearance: The character portraits in Legend of Mana draw everyone as large-headed dwarf people. I'm not sure this is their intended look in real life, so I will assume that Pearl and Blackpearl are normally proportioned.

Pearl has green eyes and thick brown hair, which poofs over her head and trails into a ponytail in the back. She wears a white dress with long, billowy sleeves; the skirt and sleeves are trimmed in red. The outer layer of the dress is almost like a jacket or overcoat. It wraps around her front and fastens there, and flares out the back. Underneath this is the skirt itself. She wears tall shoes with ribbons that wrap up her legs.

Blackpearl trades the skirt for black leggings, but keeps the tall shoes. She has some sort of wrap-skirt-type-thing that flares in the back, and her torso shirt cover may or may not be attached to this. As well, her shirt seems to have a small cape trimmed in red, reminiscent of Pearl's skirt.

Both Pearl and Blackpearl have their jewel cores in their chests.

Age: Jumi do not age or succumb to disease. They can only die if their core is removed or damaged beyond repair. Due to this, Blackpearl is probably beyond any sort of measurable age. But Pearl, being born from Blackpearl due to a confrontation between Blackpearl and Alexandra, does have a measurable age...of eighty years. (Neither age is stated in-game, but the manga suggests 80 for Pearl's age, which is about the only thing I will ever agree on with the manga.)

Log Sample (Pearl): Oh goodness, she was lost again...not again...

Pearl carefully examined her surroundings, one hand hovering protectively over her core. Perhaps she had been lost here before. Maybe if she could recognize where she was, she could find her way back to Domina and Elazul without assistant. If she did that, he might not get so mad at her for wandering away.

Oh, but this didn't look familiar at all...it was not Luon Highway, nor the Mekiv Caverns, and she was nowhere near Leires, either. This was a very dismal place indeed, and a dismal predicament she found herself in.

So then, what could she do now? It looked as though she would have to wait for help, after all. Would Lanai come to find her? Happen upon poor little Pearl, alone in the junkyard, while Lanai searched the world for...whatever it was she looked for. (Lanai was a friend of very few words, and did not seem to stick around one place for long.) Pearl felt just as bad for burdening that traveller as she did burdening Elazul...

"What if...I walked over here..." Pearl murmured, picking a direction and setting off. If she walked in one direction for some time, maybe she would find a landmark or a signpost, something to point her the way back to Domina. But after only a few steps, she changed her mind. "No," she intoned softly, "maybe this way instead..."

This too proved to be a halfhearted attempt. Pearl cautiously went back to where she'd started, both hands on her core now, shoulders hunched. "Oh no..."

A better idea, then, would be to stay in one place, and wait. Wait for help, wait for a person...and hopefully the person would be nice...

Network Sample (Blackpearl): [Normally, she would not ask for help. She can take care of herself. But now, seeing the structure of this city, the sheer strangeness of it...it is nothing like in Fa'Diel. Blackpearl fears the gaps in her memory, how she doesn't quite recall being here or coming here. She may need to take a more direct approach to information-gathering, and this device newly-clasped to her wrist may offer that...

After a few fiddles (and gasps of shock when a holographic screen pops up), she manages to get...something transmitting. She's not sure what. When she begins speaking and the line on the screen responds, she understands it's a voice recording (but how is that possible? more for later...)]

My name is Blackpearl. If anyone can...hear this, please tell me of this place.

["If anyone can hear this"? Surely no one can hear her at all...]

I just need to know the name of this city. That is all.

[Once she has a name, she can learn more.]
